Unidentified French Pre-War Chess Clock

A 1930s-style tournament clock built from two square French alarm-clock units in a wooden case, with the complete maker still unknown.

Unidentified French prewar clock with two square dial surrounds.

Construction

The clock uses two square 'Made in France' alarm units inside a dark wooden case. Rounded-square bezels, Art Deco numerals, red fall flags, and deposited-model-type markings fit the visual vocabulary of French clocks from the period.

Attribution

No maker has been securely identified. The strongest claim is therefore structural: standardized French domestic clock units were adapted into a chess-timing case.

Historical Significance

The clock adds another branch to the French wooden-case tradition and reinforces the broader argument that limited French chess-clock production often grew by repurposing mechanisms from a much larger ordinary clock industry.
