Delaire, Paris

A French chess supplier's branded clock that appears to combine Parisian commercial identity with German Junghans mechanics.

Delaire, Paris chess clock in a rounded wooden case.

Henri Delaire and French Chess

Henri Delaire directed La Stratégie, helped create the French Chess Federation, and became its first president. He also sold chess material in Paris.

The Clock

A surviving clock carries a 'DELAIRE. PARIS' plaque and follows the early twentieth-century practice of mounting two small alarm-clock units in a wooden tournament case.

Junghans Connection

A closely related example carries Junghans star-and-J dial markings, supporting the conclusion that at least some clocks of this form used German movements.

A French Wooden-Case Tradition

The Delaire clock shares broad cabinet features with the D&B/Bayard-family wooden clock: rounded rectangular body, recessed circular units, latch hardware, and paired alarm mechanisms.

Historical Significance

The object is best understood as a French chess-market clock with a likely German mechanical core. Retail identity, case tradition, and movement origin belong to different layers.
