IDOX / Israel Watches Co.

A surviving IDOX chess clock points to a second Israeli clockmaking route, separate from the documented H. & J. Benjamin advertisement.

IDOX chess clock: twin signed dials, red flags, wooden case, and top switching buttons.

The Attribution

The dials read IDOX. Other IDOX clocks survive marked “Idox, Israel Watches Co., Made in Israel,” tying the brand to Israeli clock production.472

Dating Context

Surviving IDOX desk and alarm clocks are generally placed in the mid-century Israeli clockmaking context, especially the 1950s–1960s range.472473

A Separate Route from Benjamin

The IDOX clock should not be collapsed into the Benjamin record. The surviving object carries IDOX branding, while the Benjamin evidence comes from a separate 1956 advertisement. Together they show more than one path for Israeli chess timing.

Historical Significance

IDOX expands the Israeli record from one documented Jerusalem maker to a broader clockmaking context. The surviving chess clock is best cataloged cautiously as an IDOX / Israel Watches Co. mechanical chess clock, likely from the late 1950s–1960s, until firmer model-specific dating evidence appears.
