HES - An Indian Mechanical Chess Clock from Bombay

Czechoslovak Technical Cooperation

A 1966 HES advertisement stated that its clocks were made in collaboration with Chronotechna of Czechoslovakia to meet international specifications. That company-level relationship is documented.

The Chess Clock

The surviving HES chess clock is a conventional twin-dial mechanical timer with a wood-grain case, contrasting black and white faces, red flags, and top-mounted controls. No dated catalog or factory record for this specific chess model has yet been located.

Dating

The company's mechanical-production period and the clock's design make the 1970s a reasonable provisional date, but it should remain explicitly provisional.

Historical Significance

HES represents post-independence industrial development through international technical cooperation: an Indian-made product from a domestic company that drew upon established Czechoslovak horological expertise. The evidence does not justify claiming that Chronotechna designed this exact model.
